CHAPUNGU are putting on a brave face despite threats of relegation following Zifa’s decision to rescind a resolution to relegate only two teams this season.
The Zifa Assembly voted to revert to the old system of relegating four teams and promoting an equal number, with one from each of the national association’s four regions.
Chapungu lost 0–2 to title chasing FC Platinum and presently occupy the fourth relegation slot with 31 points and must win their remaining two games against Hwange and Caps United and hope that Hwange, Triangle and How Mine somehow falter for them to remain in the topflight should the Zifa vote stand.
Chapungu chief executive officer Chris-Levine Mukotekwa said his side was focused on fulfilling its remaining fixtures and was yet to be briefed by the PSL on any new developments regarding relegation and promotion.
“At the moment we are not aware of anything going on and our focus is on fulfilling the remaining fixtures. What you are alluding to are press reports, but according to the PSL resolution at the beginning of the season, clubs agreed that only two teams will be relegated and that is what we are working with,” said Mukotekwa.
He declined to comment on the tiff between Zifa and the PSL, referring queries to PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele.
