Chapungu coach bullish as team take pole position

AFTER watching his team shoot to the top of the Zimbabwe Women’s Football Super League over the weekend, Chapungu Queen’s coach Perkins Nyamutamba believes his troops have a real chance to gun for the league title this season.

The Air Force of Zimbabwe side is now on top with 24 points from nine outings.

Going into this match, they were third-placed behind pacesetters and champions Herentals Queens and second-placed Harare City Queens.

But they leapfrogged the two teams involved in a top-of-the-table clash at Motor Action Sports Club. But the high-profile encounter ended in a draw as Herentals had to come from behind to force a draw against the council side.

The champions now occupy the second slot with 23 points and the same number of games as Chapungu.

Chapungu were on fire as they hammered Yadah Queens 5-0 at Manyame Airbase Sports Club. In-form right winger Dorothy Nyoni grabbed a brace while Vimbai Mharadzi, Miranda Ncube and Thandoluhle Nkala weighed in with a goal each.

Nyoni is scoring an average of two goals in every match.

And the Mighty Warriors assistant coach Nyamutamba is optimistic that this could be their year.

“We are excited with the way we are playing. Now that we are on top of the league, we are not looking back. We are gunning for the league. We want to win the league this year,” declared Nyamutamba.

The coach says his defence is very solid this season. So far, the team has conceded three goals but Correctional Queens has the tightest defence having only conceded one goal.

“The back four are driving the team. They are very stable and working together with our goalkeeper Busi Ncube they have managed to defend well and keep clean sheets in most matches. Busi is an excellent goalkeeper.

“We have been doing well up front as well with our strikers Ncube and Ethel Chinyengetere. Dorothy is enjoying good form. She is scoring an average of two goals every match. Upcoming Cleopatra Chigubhu is also one for the future. She is young but is very effective as a super sub,” said Nyamutamba. So far Chapungu have lost one game. They have a tough encounter this weekend when they face Rosemary Mugadza Harare City Queens. They will play champions Herentals in the last game of the first round, which is five games away.

In the other match between Herentals Queens and Harare City Queens, Mighty Warriors striker Maud Mafuruse scored for the hosts while Harare skipper Rudo Neshamba levelled terms for a 1-1 draw.

At Crescent Ground in Bulawayo, Queen Lozikeyi lost 0-4 to Conduit Soccer Academy. The revived Conduit finally won a game courtesy of goals from Netty Chimanga who fired a double while Chiedza Paraganda and Bridget Dhambiyano scored a goal each.

Black Rhinos Queens were awarded their game against Shine Shine Queens on a 3-0 scoreline. The Masvingo newcomers were the home team but were walked over by the Harare side.

Midlands State University Queens beat Chipembere Queens 1-0. Roselyn Dube scored the all-important goal.

Sithetheliwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda’s Platinum Royals were held to a goalless draw by Black Mambas at Greasham ground in Zvishavane.
