CHAPUNGU turned on the style in the second half as they demolished troubled Buffaloes in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie at Ascot yesterday. The first half was a drab affair with the only talking point being Allen Tavarwisa’s 32nd minute opener from the game’s first shot on target.Tavarwisa was given all the time he needed to chest a Hillary Mugoniwa cross before sending in a low shot that beat goalkeeper Tandadzayi Chenge. The home side came back for the second half all fired up and Tineyi Chitora slotted home to double the lead in the 55th minute.

Chitora was back again to haunt Buffaloes nine minutes later, easily tapping home after Tandadzayi fumbled a speculative Mugoniwa shot. Chapungu got their fourth from an unlucky Farai Banda who turned the ball into his own net on the hour mark as he struggled to clear the lines following a Mugoniwa corner kick.

Hillary Madzivanyika scored a consolation for the visitors eight minutes from time when he connected a cross by Shepherd Nkata. Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino said the win was a big morale booster ahead of the airmen’s clash with Dynamos in the semi finals of the Chibuku Super Cup. “It’s a good morale booster ahead of our match against Dynamos in the Chibuku Cup. The players responded well in the second half after a slow start,” he said. Buffaloes’ Saul Chaminuka chose to apportion blame on the match officials rather than his team’s shortcomings or the hosts’ brilliance.

“I have bad memories of most of my visits here at Ascot. I don’t want to comment much about the referees but the second goal was a turning point. I think it was scored from an offside position,” he said.
