ZIMBABWEAN golfer Tongoona Charamba finished a credible seventh as he rallied from behind at the Dimension Data Sunshine Tour tournament in George, South Africa, yesterday.
Charamba shot an identical two over par-75 in the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday but got his act back together to card a decent five under-par 65 on Saturday.
Yesterday, Charamba was one stroke better as he scored 66 to finish with an aggregate score of 283.
He was 10 strokes behind tournament winner Hennie Otto of South Africa who clinched the championship on 273.
James Kingston was second on 67, 72, 70 and 68 to go home R345 000 richer.
Charamba’s 66 was the best score of the day yesterday and he finished the last round tied with Dawie Van Der Walt but the South African eventually settled for 18th position.
For his seventh position, Charamba was tied with Sunshine Tour household names Jean Hugo, Charl Coetzee, Chris Swanepoel and Tyrone Mordt, all from South Africa.
Charamba pocketed R64 950 for his efforts and also made his best finish at the tour this year.
Another Zimbabwean golfer, Bruce MacDonald, also received some purse money as he finished on 289 after firing 75, 70, 71 and completing his round with a 73.
MacDonald’s par scores saw him taking home R23 700, the same amount Trevor Fisher and Tyrone Ferreira received for their even scores and finishing tied in 33rd position.
The other Zimbabwean golfers Ignatius Mketekete, Mike Curtis, Mohammed Mand-hu, Ryan Cairns, Phillip Tshuma and Dean Schoultz failed to make the cut
The golfers had gone into the tournament after taking part in the Africom Zimbabwe Open last month. The R3 million Dimension tournament attracted 160 golfers.
