MAKANAKAISHE ‘King Kong’ Charamba finished second at a track and field event in Budapest, Hungary on Tuesday against a world class field of athletes.
In the event won by Moroccan Yassine Hssine in 19.92 seconds now his country’s national record, the big Zimbabwean clocked 20.09 seconds. His season’s best is 19.88 and is the fastest by a Zimbabwean this season over the distance.
Once again his reaction off the blocks was a let down but he recovered to power home in second place.
Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike was third in 20.18 seconds. That was the Nigerian’s season best.
Aaron Brown clocked 20.20 seconds for fourth place with Jamaican Gary Card fifth in 20.28 seconds.
Ashley Miller of Zimbabwe finished fifth in the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 55.03 seconds.
But the evening cheer for Zimbabweans was on Thandazani Ndhlovu who finished a hearty fourth in the 400m with a superb time of 44.64 seconds, 0.06 seconds off Lewis Banda’s national record set in 2004.
Zimbabwe athletes continue to excel on the global stage, a good sign for the encouragement of the development of the sport back home.
