ZIMBABWE sprint star Makanakaishe Charamba will be chasing an elusive top-two finish when he lines up in the 200m at the Diamond League Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, this afternoon.
Charamba has been one of the standout performers in the 2026 track and field season, putting together a string of impressive results that have seen him emerge as one of the leading contenders in the event.
The Zimbabwean has enjoyed a remarkable season, highlighted by a personal best 19.88 seconds over 200m, just short of the national record held by compatriot Tapiwanashe Makarawu.
Makarawu, who has endured an injury-hit season, has been restricted to only a handful of races this year.
Charamba will face a strong field in Zurich, including South African Sinesipho Dambile, American Kenny Bednarek and Jamaica’s Bryan Levell.
Dambile leads the standings heading into the decisive race with 35 points, followed by Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo on 30 and Charamba on 19.
Bednarek is fourth on 16 points but remains a serious threat given his pedigree and could upset the leading contenders on Thursday.
Only athletes finishing among the top eight or nine in the Diamond League standings are expected to progress to the final championship field, making every point crucial.
Charamba will therefore need another strong performance as he seeks to cap an outstanding season with a top finish against some of the world’s best sprinters.
