TWO brilliant unbeaten tons from Tuskers’ experienced duo of skipper Brian Chari and Nkosana Mpofu put the Bulawayo side in front on day one of their last 2023/24 Logan Cup season match against Rhinos at Harare Sports Club yesterday.

Mpofu managed to score his highest First-Class score while Chari is also closing in on his highest score in First Class cricket as they notched up an unbeaten 287 runs third wicket partnership at the end of play yesterday.

At stumps, Tuskers — who have been batting well in their past two matches — finished on a commanding 330/2 in the 88 overs played. They had only lost the wickets of Tanunurwa Makoni and Sami Ullah for 20 and two runs respectively.

Mpofu, opening the batting for Tuskers surpassed his previous best score of 130 runs not out as he ended the day on an unbeaten brilliantly played 151 runs off 279 balls while Chari finished the day on 148 runs from 212 deliveries. Chari’s highest score in First Class cricket is 155 runs.

Both Tuskers wickets that fell on day one were taken by Tafara Chingwara, who finished with figures of 2/40 in 13 overs.

The two experienced and seasoned campaigners have put Tuskers on the front seat going into the second day of the game.

Meanwhile, there was another run scoring spree in the other Logan Cup match that was taking place at Old Hararians Sports Club between Eagles and Mega Market Mountaineers.

Tony Munyonga stole the show for Mountaineers with a breathtaking double century, falling for 237 runs off 254 deliveries while young Brian Bennett was still going strong on 171 runs not out after facing 189 balls. The title chasing Mountaineers finished day one on 462/5.

The five wickets that fell were taken by Hamza Sajjad (3/63), Romario Roach (1/70) and Alex Russell (1/154). Mountaineers’ quick scoring on day one has put them ahead as well, taking charge of the match.

Following an exhilarating first day of cricket in the two matches, day two promises to be yet another entertaining display as the curtain comes down on the Logan Cup. Play resumes at 10am for both matches. —@brandon_malvin
