THE Annual Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute of Zimbabwe (CGAIZ) Conference is underway in Victoria Falls with a call on both private and public sector players to join hands with the Government in accelerating economic transformation in line with Vision 2030 targets.
The conference runs under the theme: “Attaining Vision 2030, Chartered Governance and Accountancy Professionals – Catalysts for Economic Transformation”, and reflects on the state of the country’ economy and the need for collective stakeholder contribution in making an upper middle-income vision by 2030 a reality, CGAIZ president, Mr Jonathan Dube, has said.
CGAIZ chief executive officer, Dr Lovemore Gomera in his welcome remarks has stressed the need for all stakeholders to work closely with the Government in driving economic transformation by proffering solutions to challenges that hinder business growth.
Guest of honour, Mr Allen Choruma, an experienced lawyer and corporate governance expert who is Head of the Corporate Governance Unit in the Office of the President and Cabinet, has spoken passionately about the need to reboot public sector operations as a critical enabler to unlocking higher potential.
He bemoans the drop in contribution to GDP by state owned enterprises and parastatals to about 10 percent from a peak of 40 percent in the past and challenges the sector to improve its performance.
Mr Choruma says councils, road authorities and utilities must render quality service delivery, play their roles as expected and shun corruption to ensure vision 2030 goals are achieved.
He has reiterated the Government commitment to creating a sound business environment through enabling policy and regulatory environment and urges private sector players to equally play their part in driving investments and scaling up production.
The poor state of performance by the state owned enterprises and parastatals, he says, is a burden to the Government as it strains the fiscus through debt.

This year’s conference runs from 27 to 30 September under the theme: “Attaining Vision 2030, Chartered Governance and Accountancy Professionals – Catalysts for Economic Transformation”, bringing together local and foreign governance and accounting professionals, chief executive officers, managing director, auditors, human resource and marketing officials, students and academics, among others.

According to the organisers, during the official proceedings that begin today a high-level panel of presenters is lined up for the next two days. These include, CGAIZ chief executive Dr Gomera, president Jonathan Dube, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor Dr John Mangudya, Zimra Commissioner General Ms Regina Chinamasa, Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce CEO Mr Christopher Mugaga, World Bank senior representative Patrick Kabuya, business consultants and development partner organisation leaders.

In a preliminary brief shared with the media, CGAIZ has said in line with the theme of the conference, several topics will be discussed, including the need to strengthen Zimbabwean institutional capacity for the attainment of Vision 2030, good corporate governance, ethical considerations, the role of public audits and mind renewal, among others.
