In the currently active 2023/24 season, seven Premier League clubs are participating in European competition, as has been the trend in recent years. Before the season even begins, England is guaranteed four spots in the Champions League, two spots in the Europa League, and one spot in the Europa Conference League.
English Clubs participating in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League:
- Manchester City
- Arsenal
- Newcastle
- Manchester United
The top four teams in the Premier League concluded with Manchester City successfully defending their title, while Arsenal secured the second-place position.
Although Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal fell short in the title race, they’ve returned Champions League football to the Emirates Stadium after a hiatus since the 2016/17 season.
Manchester United clinched the third spot, and under Eddie Howe’s management, Newcastle secured fourth place, granting them a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2002.
All four teams have begun the group stage of the Champions League competition. But the question remains: Which clubs are most likely to advance beyond the group stage?
The only Premier League clubs to have lifted the prestigious UCL trophy over the last decade are Manchester City (2023), Chelsea (2021 & 2012), and Liverpool (2019).
Throughout history, Liverpool remains as the English team with the highest number of victories in this competition. And in 2023, Manchester City joined the ranks as the sixth English side to triumphantly raise the renowned trophy.
| Club | UCL Titles | Seasons Won |
| Liverpool | 6 | 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005, 2019 |

Manchester United: Champions League 2023/24 Group A
A Cinderella story anticipated by United fans following a decade of struggle has become a nightmare this season.
Since 1978, Man United hadn’t experienced a three-game streak of conceding at least three goals, but this statistic was abolished. With 12 goals conceded in just eight domestic games this season, it’s one of their worst starts in recent memory.
These horrid performances have transitioned to the European stage, and the number three continues to haunt Erik tan Hags’s men. A 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich kicked off United’s UCL campaign, and while this can be excused, a follow-up 3-2 loss to Galatasaray can’t.
The Red Devils have allowed more goals (7) than any other club competing in the Champions League through the first two matchdays. And with an appalling domestic season to match, they’re the least likely team to advance from the UCL group stage.
Champions League Group A Standings
| Teams | GP | W | L | D | GF | GA | Pts |
| Bayern Munich | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 6 | 4 | 6 |
| Galatasaray | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 5 | 4 | 4 |

| Manchester United | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 5 | 7 | 0 |
Arsenal: Champions League 2023/24 Group B
Arsenal’s first and only loss of the entire season – domestic and European – arrived when Lens finished a comeback win in the French club’s first UCL home game in two decades. However, this result didn’t stunt The Gunners’ surrounding performances and could be viewed as a blip in the system.
Mikel Arteta’s men ran through PSV in their Champions League opener (4-0), and a recent league success (1-0) over their EPL rivals Manchester City is more than enough evidence that this squad has what it takes to go deep in the competition.
Champions League Group B Standings
| Teams | GP | W | L | D | GF | GA | Pts |
| Lens | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 4 |
| Arsenal | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 5 | 2 | 3 |

| PSV | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 6 | 1 |
Newcastle: Champions League 2023/24 Group F
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle had a rocky start to their season with a trio of defeats. Fortunately, their form has flipped, and it arrived just as the Tyneside faithful began their UCL campaign in a group labelled the “Group of Death”.
Holding AC Milan to a draw at the San Siro delivered a surprise result, but even more shocking faces looked on when The Magpies delivered a 4-1 whooping to French giants PSG.
On paper, Newcastle’s opponents are some of Europe’s most respected and feared clubs. However, the current form of these squads besides Milan has much to be desired, and should the North English club remain defensively robust as they have been in recent weeks, they might top the group in first place.
Champions League Group F Standings
| Teams | GP | W | L | D | GF | GA | Pts |
| Newcastle | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 1 | 4 |
| PSG | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 3 | 4 | 3 |

| Dortmund | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
Manchester City: Champions League 2023/24 Group G
City claimed European football’s ultimate prize for the first time in May, defeating Internazionale in Istanbul. Their campaign to defend their title commenced with an emphatic 3-1 victory against Red Star Belgrade on.
Pep will be urging his striker, Erling Haaland to emulate the best players in the world and encouraging his players to strive for a feat accomplished only by Real Madrid in 2017 and 2018, who became the sole team to successfully retain the European Cup since Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan did so in 1990, during the pre-Champions League era, and with another 3-1 success in their second meeting, it’s a goal that’s looking very achievable.
The Citizens have arguably received the easiest path to group qualification given the difficulty of opposition in Group G, and having already defeated the stiffest competition in RB Leipzig, there’s a reason why they’re the largest price to quality from all of the English clubs at the bookmakers.
Champions League Group G Standings
