Several popular musicians rocked the sleepy Checheche Growth Point on Saturday afternoon at a free show organised by the Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association for its ground breaking ceremony for residential stands at the township. The Chipinge Rural District Council intends to turn Checheche into a town and the development of residential stands by ZAHA at the centre is part of the project to earn the status.
ZAHA director general Killer Zivhu said they brought the musicians to Checheche as part of activities for their ground breaking ceremony and also to make them become familiar with the area. Big name musicians are expected to flock to Checheche once it turns into a town since there would be a large population concentrated in one area.
The major draw card for the ZAHA show was Suluman Chimbetu who put a spirited performance that was welcomed by the villagers with much enthusiasm.
Sulu played his father Simon’s songs and his own compositions, which made a the crowd ecstatic and kept on their feet.
When he sung the popular song ‘‘Sean Timba’’, the villagers went wild as they applaused him with much vigour and enthusiasm.
Some of the people had moments to cherish when they were invited on stage by Suluman to showcase their dancing talents. Constant sungura singer Somandla “Mafia” Ndebele also put up a good show and sampled his songs from most of his golden oldies.
His play list thrilled the crowd as most people were familiar with the songs he chose for the occasion.
Most of the songs he played were from albums such as ‘‘Chidamoyo’’, ‘‘Zvamauya Zvanaka’’ and ‘‘Makobvu Nematete’’. Raunchy dancer Zoey Sifelani exhibited little of her usual dance routines, perhaps oblivious of the fact that she was dancing for a conservative rural audience.
Backed by her dancing queens, Zoey excited the crowd, but was good enough to realise when she was getting too far and used the response from the crowd to judge if she was still within limits.
While revellers appeared not sure of what to do with Zoey, they welcomed singer Jacob Moyana’s dirty lyrics with so much enthusiasm and surged forward once his turn on stage came.
Moyana made his name by deliberately selecting Shona phrases that have double meanings bordering on obscene language as the basis of his songs.
Other groups which performed at the musical gala were the Checheche-based sungura outfit Zhowe Express and gospel music singer Trymore Bande.
