AS largely expected, tournament favourites Uganda and Zimbabwe yesterday made strong starts to the World Rugby SVNS3 Africa Qualifiers, with both sides remaining unbeaten after the opening day in Kampala, Uganda
The Kampala crowd was treated to some electrifying Sevens rugby throughout the day at a packed Kyadondo Rugby Grounds, as the eight-team tournament lived up to its billing from the outset.
It was pleasing to witness some of the smaller teams in the tournament showing signs of improvement and making the stronger sides dig deep, but Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia all underlined their credentials as they look to challenge for the tournament title.
Zimbabwe had to sweat for their 19-12 opening win against Morocco in Pool A, with the North Africans putting on a strong second-half performance as the Cheetahs held on for victory.
Ghana, too, came back from the break a better side against Zimbabwe, scoring two quick tries through Abdul Jalilu Yussuf and Nhyira Owusu-Ansah.
However, breakaway tries by Ryan Musumhi, Tavonga Ablant, Trevor Gurwe and Dion Khumalo in the first half had created a comfortable lead for the Zimbabwe Cheetahs whose 40-17 victory was completed by Tatenda Kamubvumbi’s late try.
Uganda blitzed Senegal 38-0 in their first Pool B game, but Tunisia proved a tougher opponent in their second match, with the hosts managing a 26-10 victory. Tries by Malcolm Okello, Aaron Tukei and Shakim Semburi, as well as a penalty try, were all Uganda needed, while Tunisia fought back through Yasinne Riyeni’s brace of tries.
Earlier in the day, Nigeria beat Ghana 26-5, Zambia defeated Tunisia 10-7 and Senegal 17-14, while Morocco overcame Nigeria 36-5.
Uganda will face Zambia, the other undefeated team in Pool B, in their final group game this morning while Zimbabwe will take on Nigeria in Pool A in matches that will decide the final standings in the pools.
