Chegutu Pirates dismiss claims

AS the drama at Chegutu Pirates continues to unfold, the club’s executive vice-chairperson, Musiiwa Dube, has dismissed reports that the executive has been dissolved.Problems at the club started in the past few weeks when a section of the supporters, led by Jorum Chiwhewhete, claimed to have taken over team.

However, Dube, who is the deputy chairman to Lillian Mandeya at the club, said they are still in charge of the team and there are no changes at the World Navi Northern Region Division One soccer league club.

“There are no changes to the executive. There are guys who tried to push the executive out but they failed,” said Dube.

“There are some unfortunate incidents with those that want to push the executive. Those guys are always claiming and saying that they are in charge of the team but they are not.

“The bottom line is we are in charge, you cannot just claim to be the executive for Chegutu Pirates because it is owned by the Municipality.

“That team is owned by the council so whatever the council decide carries the day, so there is nothing like a change to the executive,” said Dube.

The current fights have seen former Chegutu coach, Tavaka Gumbo, bulldozing his way back to the club and it’s claimed he has been training the team since last week.

But Dube said the issue will be discussed during a meeting to be held on Monday as they try to restore sanity to the club.

“We always have these meetings. As far as we are concerned the executive is not going to be discussed but we are going to talk about the way forward after these problems.

“With these disturbances, Tavaka Gumbo took advantage. The problem with soccer is that it has got some rules and regulations. For example, you cannot involve the police so we are going to use football rules to make sure Tavaka Gumbo is not with the team.

“That’s the agenda of the meeting because right now we are more of starting afresh because of these problems.  It has disturbed our players and some of our sponsors. The team was now doing well,” said Musiiwa.

The disturbances at the club resulted in their game against Starbill last week being postponed.

Zifa Northern Region Division One soccer league secretary-general, Sweeney Mushonga, yesterday said they will not entertain bogus people masquerading as football administrators.

“At the beginning of each year the league is served with information on the executive that will be running the day-to-day affairs of a club,” Mushonga said.

“If there are any changes they should be communicated to us by the relevant authority. So I think we haven’t received information to that extent from the people we recognise to be in charge of Chegutu Pirates.

“We will not entertain any bogus people, those that have been given the mandate should run the team,” said Mushonga.

Mushonga said they will not be intimidated by anyone as they seek to build and maintain a professional league.
