Cherish gains of Uhuru, youths urged

Patrick Chitumba Midlands Bureau Chief
THE political independence brought about by the gallant sons and daughters of the soil after a protracted armed struggle must be cherished as it has created a conducive environment where young people can pursue their dreams.

National executive member for Children of Zimbabwe National War Veterans Association (CZNLWVA) and Zanu-PF Midlands Youth League provincial member Cde John Muchenje said youths should take advantage of the prevailing peace in the country to support Government efforts in reviving the economy.

Cde Muchenje, who is a champion farmer, said the future of the country was bright.

“Youths have benefited from Government programmes,” he said. “As a farmer, I will speak with a bias towards farming. President Mnangagwa has said Zimbabwe is largely an agrarian economy and thus the success of any investments is anchored on the success of agriculture.

“Youths also benefited from land reform as a lot of us now own farms which we are using and Government has pledged to prioritise youths after the land audit report. Government programmes like Command Agriculture and youth funds have benefited the youths. These are the benefits we are enjoying because of the independence.”

Cde Muchenje said the drive for economic empowerment was premised on the need for young people to play an active and practical role in all sectors of the economy.

“It could be mining, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, etc, but because our economy is agro-based there is need for young people to play a telling role in agriculture,” he said. “It’s the reason why our liberation struggle was centred on land.”

Cde Muchenje said young people must locate themselves in the national development matrix through identifying their talents.
