NATIONAL men’s cricket team coach Justin Sammons is expected in the country this weekend as he is expected to commence his national team duties on Monday.

Sammons was named Chevron’s head-coach last week, taking over from Dave Houghton who resigned from the post last December after Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the ongoing T20 World Cup in the Americas. Sammons’ first task as the Chevrons coach will be a five-match T20I series against India.

The series is set for July 6 to July 14 at Harare Sports Club.

Sammons, who will be deputized by former Chevrons all-rounder Dion Ebrahim, is expected to get down to business five days before the Indian series.

“Yes, he will be in charge, and we are expecting him to commence duty on the 1st of July, ahead of the home series against India,” said ZC spokesperson Darlington Majonga. With Ebrahim being the only member of Sammons’s technical set-up, Majonga revealed that the incoming coach had already suggested people he would want to make his technical team.

“Justin (Sammons) has already suggested the technical set-up he would want in place and we are currently finalising negotiations with the individuals he recommended before we announce the appointments and the process should be completed before the India series starts.

“We are planning to announce the full technical department within the next few days once internal processes are finalised,” said Majonga.

As part of selecting the team to face India, two T20 matches between the Northerns and Southerns have been organised.

“On selection, our coaches are always consulted, so, yes, his input will be considered. “We are expecting the final squad that will face India to be announced this weekend after the two regional T20 matches between Northerns and Southerns that ZC has organised for this Friday and Saturday as part of our preparations for the upcoming international series,” said Majonga.
