CHEVRONS STARING DEFEAT

THE Chevrons are staring defeat in the one-off Test as they need 109 runs, with just three wickets in hand, on the final day at Queens Sports Club.

Bad light ensured that day four would end early on a day when the start of the game was delayed by 15 minutes due to wet outfield.

Ireland have all the aces after reducing Zimbabwe to 183-7 at stumps yesterday.

Wessley Madhevere fought long and hard and was unbeaten on 61 at the close.

He had paceman Newman Nyamhuri, who was on five after facing 19 balls, for company.

Rain is forecast today and that could be the only way the Chevrons are likely to save the Test unless there is something miraculous from the tail.

Madhevere hit seven fours in his impressive knock.

Matthew Humphreys took 5-41 for the Irish.

Brian Bennett, with 55 runs, and Johnathan Campbell with 33, played their part for the hosts.

In the very first over, Barry McCarthy nipped out the nightwatchman − Gwandu.

Bennett and Madhevere batted quite well to ensure no further setbacks in the first hour. The heavens opened up which resulted in a session and a half getting washed out.

In the extended final session, Humphreys struck in his first over of the day by inducing Bennett’s outside edge and thereby breaking the half-century partnership.

Madhevere was involved in another fifty stand and notched up his maiden Test fifty in the process.

Captain Campbell looked to be positive before falling for 33.
