ZIMBAWE representatives at this year’s World Youth Chess Championship Cheziya Gokwe High, who left the country for Italy on Saturday, are confident of doing well.

The team made up of Ishmael Kaitano, Gamuchirai Gogoma and Ezywell Mutema has seasoned coach Blessing Jenami.

Cheziya Gokwe High were crowned Crystal Candy Schools Chess League Champions back in September to get the ticket to represent the country.

Jenami said they have confidence in the team which they have and are looking forward to do well.

“We are happy that we will be representing the country at this year’s World Youth Championship in Montesilvano in Italy. We have some seasoned players with two of them Kaitano and Gogoma doing form four while Mutema is in form one.

“Cheziya is well known for their support for academics and sports and we are grateful to everyone who supported us. The opportunity is good for us as it will give the players some exposure.

“We are happy with the support we received from Zimbabwe Chess Federation as well as the school head.

“We are well known as the chess hub not in Midlands alone but countrywide. I am we will continue doing well in supporting the sport. We are happy that we are put-ting Gokwe on the map unlike the stereotype that is associated with our place. We have shown that we have so much talent,” said Jenami. Cheziya Gokwe High headmaster Tongesai Manyere said they are happy with the support they received from FIDE and ZCF.

“We are happy to have managed to send the team after we failed to send a team to Kazakhstan for the 2023 World School Team Chess Championship,” said Munyere.
