Chibondo reburials commence

The Fallen Heroes of Zimbabwe Trust exhumed the remains early this year. The Trust and the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Department of National Museums and Monuments are carrying out the burials.
Speaking at the commencement of the reburial ceremony yesterday, Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment Minister Saviour Kasukuwere said the process should remind Zimbabweans of the cruelty of the Ian Smith regime.
“I hope that the area will become a national shrine and remind people of the atrocities of the Ian Smith regime and the holocaust carried out against our people. This process should give finality through the decent burial of the fallen heroes that even every one of us requires,” he said.
Minister Kasukuwere dismissed accusations by some quarters of the society that the reburial process was an election gimmick by Zanu-PF. “You can not campaign by burying people. Zanu-PF can not get hope by burying people. It is the party that brought independence to Zimbabwe.
“All the people that are here are not looking for votes but are here to give our people decent burials. This process is actually an indictment on those that massacred our people and is a classic example of how our people were brutalised,” Minister Kasukuwere said.
Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central chairman Cde Dickson Mafiosi commended the Trust for leading the reburial process.
“As Zanu-PF we are happy that we are giving our heroes decent burials that they deserve. These people were killed by the Ian Smith regime and we thank all those that have contributed to ensure that these heroes are properly buried,” he said. Cde Mafiosi said it was necessary for the inclusive Government to provide more resources for such heroes lying elsewhere in Zimbabwe to be properly buried.
Secretary general of FHZT, Cde Anna Garikai commended the community in Mashonaland Central for providing resources to carry out the burials.
