ON paper, this is one of the biggest games on the local football calendar, but the display from both teams did not justify its ranking in the Castle Lager Premiership.
Both teams failed to create any meaningful chances in the entire 90 minutes in a game that turned out to be a yawn.
In the first half, there was no shot on target from either team despite CAPS United winger, Junior Bunjira enjoying his time on the wings.
Towards the end of the first half, CAPS United got two corner kicks in a space of a minute but failed to capitalise on both.
At the stroke of half-time, Lot Chiwunga got a good chance inside the box but failed to connect the ball as they went to the break level.
Chicken Inn were to get a shot on target off George Majika in the 54th minute.
His effort from a free-kick in a promising position went straight into the hands of Tonderayi Mateyaunga, in goals for CAPS United.
Three minutes later, Chiwunga got another chance but failed to connect once again.
In the 63rd minute, Joseph Tulani took a shot from outside the box but Mateyaunga managed to punch it off to safety.
Towards the end of 90 minutes, Jayden Bakari was put through on goal but could not beat Donovan Bernard.
Chicken Inn coach Joey Antipas welcomed the point.
“I thought we could have sneaked it in the second half, we did get a couple of good chances and the ‘keeper made a couple of brilliant saves but we just have to keep on going. One thing I can say is that in the first half, no one came up with a killer ball but in the second half we increased our intensity, our intensity was good, put them under pressure but it’s goals that win the game.
“All we have to do is keep working and working and we will come right. There was a couple of good performances from Mpumelelo (Bhebhe) in his first game since coming back from the States. I thought we did well but we just lacked a bit of creativity, that’s where we are lacking, we create the chances and miss, it’s part of the game,” said Antipas.
CAPS United coach Llyod Chitembwe thought it was a balanced match.
“It was a good game. I thought on the balance of play we did more to win it but unfortunately, it wasn’t our day. In the last moments of the match, we had a very good chance to get a winner but I just want to put that to the transgressions of the past week.
“We did not have the best of preparations for the match so sometimes in football these little things will take away the element of luck I am sure the boys have learnt the hard way through some of these transgressions but all the same I just want to give them credit, they came here, they fought and I think the day belongs to them for the work they put and the desire to want to win the game so I thought it was a very decent performance,” said Chitembwe.
