THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between champions Chicken Inn and FC Platinum set for Barbourfields Stadium yesterday was called off at the last minute on the advice of the country’s security organs.

According to Chicken Inn secretary-general Tawengwa Hara, PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele called to inform him that the match could not proceed upon the advice of the police.

“Our match was called off and from what the chief (CEO) is saying, it was upon the advice of the security organs,” said Hara.

Ndebele could not be reached on his mobile phone yesterday, but when a Chronicle news crew arrived at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday afternoon, there were only Chicken Inn executive members, who included Hara and treasurer Mlungisi Ndebele, as well as Bulawayo City Council employees.

The stadium was deserted and Bulawayo City and Highlanders players were going through their training drills on the outside grounds.

FC Platinum did not pitch up at the match venue after being informed of the cancellation of the game. The Zvishavane-based side had arrived in Bulawayo on Tuesday.

Chicken Inn and FC Platinum have both played 11 matches, a game less than the rest of the teams in the league.

FC Platinum lie second on the table on 26 points, the same as leaders Highlanders, while Chicken Inn are seventh with 17 points.

A win for FC Platinum would have taken then three points clear of Highlanders, who play Triangle United at Barbourfields on Sunday, while a win for Gamecocks would have seen them moving to 20 points and fifth on the league table.
