Chicken Inn’s Augusto shines

CHICKEN Inn forward Clive Augusto leads the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League top goals charts with eight goals from nine games.

The development means the player’s goal scoring rate stands at 1.1 goals per match as the PSL fixtures enter Week 10 on Saturday.

Courtesy of his breathtaking scoring ability, that has seen him get two braces for Joey Antipas’ outfit, Augusto has so far charmed many local football enthusiasts and pundits alike.

When Gamecocks toured Malawi in February to take part in a four-team tournament, former Warriors coach Kallisto Pasuwa openly told this reporter that the bustling forward was a rare striker that would prove to be a thorn in the flesh for many local premiership clubs.

“He has lots of skill. Augusto has a rare ability of holding balls so well. He disposes and takes on defenders so well. He will be the man to watch in Zimbabwe this season,” said Pasuwa.

True to Pasuwa’s words, Augusto, a player formerly with Ngezi Platinum Stars, was last week named April Player of the Month and he is heavily tipped to bag this season’s Golden Boot Award.

Interestingly, in the Zifa Southern Region Division One, it’s a different story as a man who leads the top goal scorers table is not a striker but plays as a central defender.

Bulawayo City’s seasoned defender Zibusiso “Mzimara” Sibanda now has five goals under his belt after seven starts.

Sibanda, a veteran of many football battles, is consequently on a strike rate of 1.2 per match.

“It all feels good to score for my team. It all boils down to team effort and God willing, I will keep the goals coming for my club,” said Sibanda.
