IN the heart of Nkayi District, Matabeleland North Province, a movement is unfolding — one that celebrates excellence, community service, and the unwavering spirit of individuals dedicated to making a difference.
The Imiklomelo kaDakamela Awards, initiated by Chief Dakamela in 2021, have become a symbol of hope for countless individuals who strive to uplift their communities. The annual event is set to be held on April 4 and April 5, this year.
The awards are about igniting inspiration and fostering a culture of gratitude and service.
In an interview, Dr Yvonne Maphosa, a multi-award-winning author and philanthropist from Plumtree, expressed her gratitude as she reflected on her nomination for the prestigious awards.
“I was deeply honoured and humbled to learn about my selection for the Imiklomelo kaDakamela Award. This acknowledgment means a lot. It reflects the passion and effort I pour into my community initiatives and professional pursuits,” she said.
The impact of the Imiklomelo kaDakamela Awards reaches far beyond individual recognition.
“These awards inspire others to strive for excellence. In my area of work, which is education, research, writing, and philanthropy, the awards create a ripple effect by motivating others to push boundaries,” said Dr Maphosa.
The awards are a testament to how recognition can galvanise efforts and encourage collaboration, ultimately benefitting the broader community.

Mr Madinda Ndlovu, a celebrated figure in Zimbabwean football said, “It shows that the chief is working hand in hand with the community to recognise those excelling in different fields. Put in 120 percent in whatever field you are in so that you are recognised.”
Mr Ndlovu said through the chief’s initiative, a culture of excellence is being cultivated, where hard work is rewarded and celebrated.
The impact of the awards is particularly significant for community-oriented projects.
Mr Mlayo Ncube Magadlela, a villager in Chief Dakamela’s area, who initiated the “Lawe uZaluphala” programme and was nominated for an award said the awards catapult one to the next level.
“Once the traditional authority acknowledges our efforts, the public space opens up and reception is enhanced,” he said.
Renowned gynaecologist and Mpilo Central Hospital clinical director Professor Solwayo Ngwenya, said the chief’s initiative brings positive change to communities.
“The Imiklomelo kaDakamela awards represent an act of innovation by the chief to recognise and honour people during their lifetime. This will go a long way in positively helping us with motivation to work for the community,” he said, underlining the transformative power of recognition.
The collective voices of these remarkable individuals paint a vivid picture of a community invigorated by the recognition bestowed by Chief Dakamela. It is a movement that encourages authenticity, collaboration and a genuine desire to uplift others.
As Dr Maphosa aptly put it, “Together, we can achieve so much more,” capturing the essence of unity that the awards embody.

In a world where individual efforts can often go unnoticed, Chief Dakamela stands as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for those dedicated to service and excellence.
His initiative not only honours those who have made significant contributions but also inspires countless others to follow in their footsteps. As Nkayi District continues to celebrate heroes in the region, one thing is clear: The Imiklomelo kaDakamela Awards are not just an event; they are a movement that ignites passion, fosters community spirit and lays the groundwork for a brighter, more inclusive future. — @TeamKarubwa
