Chief Sogwala burial set for Sunday

THE late Chief Sogwala from Lower Gweru will be buried at his homestead tomorrow (Sunday), Gweru District Development Coordinator, Mr Tarisai Mudadigwa, has said.

Chief Sogwala, who has been on the throne since 1981 died at the age of 92 peacefully at his homestead.

Mr Mudadigwa said all has been set for his burial that should take place around 10AM on Sunday.
“The late Chief Sogwala will be buried at his homestead in Ward 7, Sogwala Village in Lower Gweru on Sunday,” he said.

Mr Mudadigwa said mourners are gathered at the late chief’s homestead in Sogwala Village.

Midlands provincial chief’s council chairperson, Chief Ngungumbane, said the Midlands Province is shrouded in mourning following the passing of Chief Sogwala whom he described as a revered traditional leader who left an indelible mark on the region.
“Fellow chiefs and community members alike pay tribute to his exceptional leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to preserving cultural heritage,” said Chief Ngungumbane.

He said Chief Sogwala was appointed to the chieftainship on November 10, 1981, making him one of the longest-serving chief in Zimbabwe.
“As a fountain of knowledge and tradition, Chief Sogwala was respected for his ability to balance modernity with cultural values.
“One of Chief Sogwala’s notable legacies was his advocacy for rural industrialisation, aligning with the Government’s Vision 2030. He championed initiatives to empower local communities through economic development, recognising the potential for growth and self-sufficiency in rural areas,” he said.

Chief Ngungumbane said Chief Sogwala’s vision for a prosperous Midlands Province, where tradition and progress coexist, inspired many.

He said the province will remember Chief Sogwala for his wise counsel, frankness, and dedication to unity and teamwork.
“His legacy as a role model and leader of unimpeachable integrity will continue to inspire future generations. The Midlands Provincial Assembly of Chiefs and the entire nation extend their deepest condolences to his family, clan, and community, mourning the loss of a true leader who will be greatly missed,” he said.
