HWANGE Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) Holdings has reaffirmed its commitment to employee well-being and strengthened community partnerships during its recent Wellness Day celebration, held under the theme “Our Health, Our Wealth.”

The event, popularly known as KaLife KaMushe, brought together workers, business partners and residents for a day dedicated to health, fitness and community spirit. The colourful occasion was graced by Chief Whange, who served as guest of honour, alongside Government officials and representatives from the Hwange business community.

The celebration received strong support from wellness partners and sponsors, including TM Pick n Pay, OK Supermarket, CABS, ZB Bank, ZimHwangeCoal, AFC Bank, South Mining, ZZEE, ZRP, FBC, Nyaradzo Group and Doves Funeral Services.

In his keynote address, Chief Whange praised HCCL Holdings for its progressive leadership and for embedding employee and community wellness into its corporate culture.

“The 2025 Wellness Day is more than a date on the company’s calendar; it’s a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to the health, happiness and holistic well-being of everyone who forms part of HCCL Holdings and the Hwange community,” said Chief Whange.

He noted that the theme “Our Health, Our Wealth” underscores the direct link between well-being, productivity  and prosperity, particularly in the mining sector, which demands both physical endurance and mental resilience.

The event featured a variety of engaging activities, including cycling, aerobics, Zumba, boxing demonstrations, mass displays and team competitions such as golf, darts, bowling and a spirited tug-of-war. The energy and teamwork displayed reflected the company’s growing wellness culture and its collective drive to promote active, healthy living.

Delivering welcome remarks, Dr Nairos Deredzai, HCCL’s Chief Medical Officer and chairman of the Sports and Entertainment Revival Strategy, said the KaLife KaMushe Programme represents a lifestyle philosophy rooted in holistic wellness.

“Since the inception of the Well-Life Programme, we have championed a holistic approach to wellness, supporting physical fitness, mental health, nutrition, financial wellness and community engagement. Through the Khula Fund, Hwange Agric and the Sports and Entertainment MedFund, we are ensuring that every aspect of our people’s well-being is cared for,” he said.

This year’s event was held in partnership with the National Federation of Zimbabwe Bodybuilding and Fitness (NFZBBF), whose participation added professional expertise and fresh energy to the programme. Dr Deredzai noted that the collaboration is expected to pave the way for the establishment of state-of-the-art community gyms in Hwange.

“Together, we are advancing the principles of Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life,” he said.

Chief Whange further emphasised that Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are now essential for corporate success, commending HCCL Holdings for leading by example.

“ESG considerations are no longer optional; they are essential to long-term growth. HCCL Holdings’ focus on wellness demonstrates a deep sense of social responsibility and visionary leadership,” he remarked.

Beyond physical fitness, HCCL’s wellness initiatives extend to revitalising district sports, from football and netball to athletics, as part of broader efforts to rebuild community spirit and combat drug and substance abuse — a growing national concern.

As activities wrapped up, Chief Whange called on all stakeholders to uphold the wellness culture beyond the event.

“A thriving community begins with thriving individuals. Let us each do our part to nurture wellness in our workplaces, homes and hearts — for the good of Hwange and future generations,” he said.

The KaLife KaMushe Wellness Day once again affirmed HCCL Holdings’ commitment to sustainable well-being, community engagement and the belief that true wealth lies in health.

Launched in 2020, the programme is anchored on the company’s Wellness Policy.
