CHIEFS COACH PRAISES HITMAN

JOHANNESBURG. Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has spoken about Ranga Chivaviro’s rich vein of form and resurgence, which has seen the big striker score twice in the last three matches, while also revealing how he tried to sign him previously.

Chivaviro’s father is a Zimbabwean and he even stayed here in Masvingo, as a child, before deciding to play for Bafana Bafana instead of the Warriors.

After scoring just 25 goals in in 30 matches last season, Chiefs appear to have left their scoring woes behind them, having netted six times in their opening three matches.

Leading that attacking line has been Chivaviro, who, after finding the back of the net just four times last season, has already scored twice from three appearances so far this term.

Speaking to media at the post-match press conference after the 2-1 loss to Sundowns on Saturday, Nabi said he was confident the bulky marksman would improve and admitted to being a long-time admirer of the striker’s exploits with Marumo Gallants.

The 30-year-old had scored an impressive 17 goals across all competitions, including a memorable CAF Confederation Cup run that ended in the semi-final after losing to Nabi’s Young Africans.

“It’s true (I tried to sign him). At that moment, I had Fiston Mayele, and I knew he was going to leave and we looked [for a striker] and in the CAF, we played Marumo Gallants, he (Ranga) had two very good games,” Nabi told journalists.

“Kaizer Chiefs signed him because his agent talked and said: ‘No, no, go to [Chiefs], not Tanzania’.

“Yes, I know there’s progress, but Ranga needs to work more, more confidence, specific work in the finishing. I think he’s made progress, but he needs someone else with him (another striker), because if there’s two, you progress more,” explained the coach.

Meanwhile, the Glamour Boys only return to competitive action on October 26 when they face SuperSport United. – KickOff
