Chiefs condemn political violence

The chiefs’ appeal follows the burning down of a homestead belonging to Zanu-PF chairperson for Rutope district Cde Anatolia Muondoka in Musana Communal lands by suspected MDC-T activists last Monday.

In an interview Mr Joel Nyarume who is Chief Musana appealed to the nation to shun violence.
“I want to urge all political parties to shun violence. Parties should encourage their supporters to campaign peacefully,” Chief Musana said.

Mr Amon Nhapi, who is Chief Masembura, denounced violence and urged people to desist from any violent acts irrespective of their political or social differences.
“We are all Zimbabweans regardless of our differences. We do not want our children to beat each other and destroy each other’s properties. We should value life. So we are appealing for peace now, during and after the elections,” he said.

Chief Musana said police should arrest those perpetrating violence and urged courts to impose deterrent sentences to those found guilty of perpetrating violence.
He also said the police should thoroughly investigate violence that occurred in Jokonya village.

Cde Muondoka’s home was burnt down by suspected MDC-T activists on Monday last week. Police are still investigating the attacks suspected to be politically motivated.
MDC-T has unleashed a wave of intra-and inter-party political violence to trash the political environment in a bid to call for poll postponement and provide fodder for its Western allies to discredit the poll.

The party’s terror campaign began last year, but was intensified from January, with over 45 cases being recorded countrywide since the beginning of the year.
In all the recorded cases, MDC-T supporters were at the forefront of attacking their colleagues or those from other political parties, especially Zanu-PF.
