Bulawayo Chiefs 0-0 Scottland

BULAWAYO Chiefs stood firm and denied champions Scottland in a cagey, hard-fought stalemate at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday, where discipline and structure won the day over flair.

Scottland had the ball for long stretches, moved it well, and looked in control without ever truly threatening. Chiefs, compact and patient, sat in and waited. It wasn’t pretty, but it worked.

From the start, the visitors dictated tempo, building from the back and probing for openings that never quite came. Chiefs held their shape, kept their lines tight, and forced Scottland into hopeful efforts from distance.

In midfield, Melikhaya Ncube gave Chiefs some calm whenever they broke forward. He kept things ticking and tried to release runners, but clear chances remained scarce against a Scottland defence that rarely lost its footing.

The best early sight fell to Peter Muduhwa, whose low drive tested Matripples Muleya. The Chiefs goalkeeper handled it cleanly, a moment that summed up Scottland’s afternoon, plenty of possession, little real danger.

Walter Musona tried to lift his side, dropping deep, carrying the ball, and looking to spark something. He saw plenty of it but found no way through a stubborn Chiefs block and was taken off late after an industrious shift.

At the back, Scottland were just as disciplined. Kelvin Moyo, Kwakhe Thwala and Moffat Abubakar read the game well and shut down the few moments Chiefs looked to break with purpose.

The game only came to life in the closing stages.

Chiefs began to push higher, sensing an opening, and suddenly looked the more likely to steal it. Their chance came in the dying minutes when Nkosilathi Ncube found space, but he couldn’t take it, dragging his effort wide with the goal at his mercy.

Scottland had one last look themselves. Emmanuel Ziocha picked out Isakar Gurirab, but the finish drifted off target, a fitting end to a frustrating afternoon for the champions.

In the end, neither side did enough to separate themselves. It was a tactical contest, tight, controlled, and short on moments.

Chiefs coach John Nyikadzino was content with the outcome.

“I want to appreciate the effort that my players put during the game. It was a fair result at the end of the game,” he said.

Scottland coach Norman Mapeza admitted his side never quite got going.

“It was a good game of football. In the first half we were a bit slow when we were second to the ball. In the second half after making some changes we had some half chances. We will just take the point away from home,” said Mapeza.
