Government has been urged to immediately provide more funding to expand drought relief and drilling of more boreholes across Masvingo Province where tens of thousands of people face severe food shortages and lack clean water owing to recurrent droughts. At least 40 chiefs, local authority leaders from the seven administrative districts in Masvingo and war veterans yesterday held a consultative meeting with provincial affairs Minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti where they implored Government to put in place urgent measures to avert starvation in the arid province.
Zimbabwe Chiefs’ Council president Chief Fortune Charumbira who led the delegation of traditional leaders, said Government should expand the drought relief programme through the grain loan scheme and the food for work programme to ensure that families have access to food.
“We are heading for a serious crisis in the rural areas in this province unless drought relief through the grain loan scheme and food for work programme is expanded to cover all parts of the province where people are grappling with severe food shortages.
“Our appeal to Government is that every household in the rural areas should at least get a 50kg bag of maize every month.”
