COMEDIAN Clive Chigubu has opened up on the accident that nearly claimed his life and that of fellow comedian Babongile Sikhonjwa, saying everything happened in a flash.The two Bulawayo comics were involved in car crash last week Monday along Luveve Road after the Nguboyenja flyover. The accident landed Sikhonjwa in the ICU at Mpilo Central Hospital.
They were coming from South African DJ Zinhle’s All White Party at Horizon Night Club.
Chigubu said he had had one too many drinks when they left the night spot just before 3AM.
“I was walking around the club looking for Sikhonjwa from about 2.30AM because I thought he had left me. I then found him and Sikhonjwa then suggested we leave the club and go to the western areas. I have forgotten which suburb exactly,” he said.
Chigubu said he remembered entering the car and sitting at the back while Skhonjwa took to the wheel.
“I remember going to sit at the back and Sikhonjwa driving. I do not know at what speed we were going at but the next thing I know I’m sprawled on the tar in pain. I was later told I was thrown out of the back window,” he said.
Chigubu said he blacked out and woke up in hospital receiving treatment.
“I had cuts and bruises round the back and near the buttocks. I was in pain and I could not sit properly. The doctors gave me medication and I was discharged on the same day,” he said.
Chigubu said he felt better and was now covering some of the gigs that Sikhonjwa was supposed to be MCing.
“I feel better although there is some pain I’m feeling on my back and around the buttocks. Right now I’m filling in for Babo at some weddings. I will return to the stage soon and people should be geared up for more jokes,” he said.
Chigubu wished Sikhonjwa a speedy recovery.
Meanwhile, Sikhonjwa is said to be now able to speak although doctors are still draining fluid from his lungs.
His father, Nicholas Sikhonjwa Moyo, said: “He is feeling better but fluid is still being drained from his lungs. He feels pain here and there. The good thing is now he is talking”.
He said doctors were still giving him medication and he was responding well.
“We cannot put a timeframe on his recovery but he is responding well to the medication prescribed to him by the doctors,” Sikhonjwa-Moyo said.
Sikhonjwa, a popular Master of Ceremonies, was last Thursday visited by popular South African DJ Oskido and DJ Ezra Sibanda who described him as having been in a jovial mood.
