Elton Chigumbura has stepped down from captaining Zimbabwe in all the three formats of the game.
Announcing his resignation yesterday, Chigumbura said he had enjoyed the challenges that came with leading the team. He thanked the Zimbabwe Cricket board for what he described as “a great honour” to captain the senior men’s national side for the second time.
Chigumbura’s first tenure ended in June 2011 when he was replaced by Brendan Taylor. He then took over as captain for the limited-overs teams when the captaincy was split in July 2014, with Taylor retaining the Test role before resigning in March last year, leaving Chigumbura in charge of all three teams for the second time.
“I have enjoyed the challenges that came with leading the team. Now I feel it’s the best time to leave it to the next guy to lead us so I can focus on my game as a player,” said the 29-year old all-rounder, adding: “I’m sure I will lead from the front as a senior player as I still believe I have more years of playing in me and of winning games for the team.”
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has accepted Chigumbura’s resignation.
“We wish him the best with both bat and ball in his continued service to the game,” said ZC managing director Wilfred Mukondiwa. – Zim Cricket.
