POLLS open today and tomorrow for the Chihota by-election which will be contested by two candidates.
The Chihota constituency became vacant following the death of Cde Ernest Chipitiri, who had been elected to Parliament during the last general election.
The constituency, which encompasses five chiefdoms – Mudzimuirema, Chihota, Samuriwo, Nenguwo and Nyandoro – was one of the areas that saw bitter fighting between the Rhodesian forces, Zanla guerillas and the Pfumo Revanhu forces of the UANC.
The by-election would be contested between the Zanu (PF) Women’s League secretary for external affairs and Central Committee member, Cde Rashie Musungo, and an independent candidate, Cde Shadreck Chipangura.

- An election is a formal group decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual or multiple individuals to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century.
- Zimbabwe has consistently held its elections whenever they are due since the country attained its independence in 1980.
- On Wednesday Zimbabwe are expected, people are expected to go out in their numbers to vote in the country’s harmonised elections, which will cap a largely peaceful election campaign period that saw the ruling party Zanu PF flexing its mobilisation muscle, attracting huge crowds at star rallies that were held across the country.
Most reputable polls are pointing to a massive win for the ruling party.
