THE Commissioner General of police Dr Augustine Chihuri has mourned Assistant Inspector Shepherd Nyoni, popularly known as Mageza who died on Sunday last week in a road accident in Esigodini, describing him as the force’s information and communications technology (ICT) hero.
Asst Insp Nyoni and two others who are yet to be named died on the spot when his car collided head-on with an Inter Africa bus near Esikhoveni Training Centre on Sunday evening.
He was 37.
Ass Insp Nyoni was buried at his rural home in Dadata village in Matshetsheni with full police honours and a three gun salute on Thursday.
In a graveside speech read on his behalf by Superintendent Vusimuzi Nkomo, Dr Chihuri said the late Asst Insp Nyoni was an intelligent officer who transformed the ICT department in the police in Matabeleland South.
“He commenced his studies in Electronic Communication Engineering and was awarded a Diploma upon his completion in 2007. In the very year, he got posted to Matabeleland South ICT workshops where his studies included the setting up and maintenance of communication system in the whole Matabeleland South province. His dedication to work saw him being promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector in 2008, the rank he held until his untimely death,” said Dr Chihuri.
Asst Insp Nyoni was born on May 31, 1979 at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo. He did his primary education at Emakhandeni and later at Dadata primary school before enrolling at Emakhandeni Secondary School where he completed his Ordinary Level in 1995.
He moved to Matopo High in 1997 for Advanced Level.
He was attested into the police force in 2000 and rose to the rank of Assistant Inspector.
He is survived by a wife and four children.
