Law enforcement authorities are disturbed by the immoral conduct of some clergymen who take advantage of their positions to commit rape and other criminal activities, Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has said. At the 2013 Commissioner-General’s Christmas church service in Harare on Wednesday, Comm-Gen Chihuri said it was now not unusual to find clergymen being arrested for engaging in criminal activities such as fraud.
Police Chaplain General, Chief Superintendent Jeremiah Doyce, also castigated the conduct of some pastors.
Comm-Gen Chihuri said, “The crucial role played by the church in crafting a transparent and accountable organisation is underpinned to mould an individual imbued with virtues of moral uprightness, righteousness, honesty and integrity.
“As Zimbabweans, we are thus deeply disturbed by the immoral conduct of some clergymen who under the guise of holiness are taking advantage of their leadership positions to perpetrate heinous crimes such as rape against vulnerable members of their congregations.”
Comm-Gen Chihuri said churches were supposed to be embodiments of justice and peace, and to stand for what was right. He said in that regard, churches should be seen identifying with the general populace and speaking against injustices perpetrated on the weak.
“It is, therefore, important for us to understand that for Christ to dwell in us, we must have a belief in Him and His atonement,” said Comm-Gen Chihuri.
“Such a belief in Christ and the keeping of His grace are a must. By these, men are set free. So, this Christmas, dear brethren, take time to sacrifice for others, express willingness not to exalt what you have done for others and to remember what others have done for you.”
Comm-Gen Chihuri said as 2013 came to an end, they were celebrating the divine stewardship, protection and goodness of Christ exhibited throughout the year.
“We acknowledge that the year 2013 was indeed an eventful and challenging year, but through the unfailing and unmerited favour of our heavenly Father we became victors,” he said.
“As the New Year beckons, we continue to pray and seek the Lord’s divine guidance that he enables our generation to submit to his holy wisdom and to also spread the message of love and peace to all parts of the country.”
