adminChikengezha polled seven votes to beat his challenger Francis Muswere of Black Mambas who had five votes. Only 12 clubs participated in the election as Hwange, Tripple B, Monomotapa and Black Rhinos were not represented.
The position was previously held by former Dynamos treasurer Harrison Mbewe until he parted ways with the club in 2011 while Thadson Zhou was co-opted on interim basis last season before he stepped down as FC Platinum’s chairman.
Chikengezha was elated by the outcome of the poll result and pledged to continue with the professionalism displayed by his predecessors.
“I am happy the clubs have shown confidence in me. I just hope to continue with the good work that my predecessors have done. I am a person who believes that transparency is key when handling public funds.
“So we will be as transparent as possible in order to maintain the faith that has been shown in the league by the sponsors,” said Chikengezha.
The DeMbare vice-chairman now joins Highlanders’ Peter Dube and Joseph Mukoki of Monomotapa as the new governors after the other two were ushered in unopposed.
Dube is the new vice-chairman while Mukoki has now replaced Cuthbert Chitima whose team Gunners was relegated last season.
The board of governors is headed by Twine Phiri who is the chairman while the other elected members are Eric Rosen (board member Marketing) and Tawengwa Hara (Competitions).
Zifa Northern Region also maintained faith in lawyer Saidi Sangula who was yesterday elected chairman.
The position fell vacant following Solomon Mugavazi’s suspension and subsequent ban from the game over the Asiagate match-fixing allegations.
Sangula who had served as his deputy and subsequently elevated to steer the ship emerged the top favourite with 13 votes.
Rank outsider Douglas Chitongo of DStv Rangers was second with nine votes while veteran administrator Francis Zimunya’s hopes of reviving his career in football was quashed with only three votes coming his way.
Sangula was happy that they will have continuity in the way they were running the game in the region.
“I am looking forward to doing well during my term of office and hopefully will improve several things and see the sport grow,” Sangula said.
“I thank those who showed confidence in me and as Northern Region we encourage unity for progress sake.
“The good thing is that we will be working from where the outgoing executive has left,” Sangula said.
The Northern Region chairman, like any chairperson of the association’s top affiliates, will automatically become a Zifa board member.
Warriors legend John Phiri will also sit on the board as he was unopposed for the post of Zifa board member development. Division One side Black Boots’ organising secretary Sydney Madzvimbo is the new Zifa Southern Region secretary-general after beating former Highlanders manager Emmet Ndlovu in an election held on Saturday in Bulawayo.
Madzvimbo polled 18 votes against Ndlovu’s single vote.
