VETERAN journalist Mr William Chikoto has been confirmed as the Chief Executive Officer of Zimpapers, Zimbabwe’s largest integrated media group. The announcement was made yesterday by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere during the group’s Strategic Planning Workshop in Harare. The appointment takes effect immediately.
Earlier this week, Zimpapers unveiled a digital-first, integrated newsroom, positioning itself as a leader in delivering news swiftly across digital platforms while maintaining the influence of its print and broadcast channels.
Mr Chikoto, who previously served as Group Editorial Executive, had been acting CEO since January this year. He has also held key editorial positions, including Editor of The Herald and Editor of The Sunday Mail, two of Zimpapers’ flagship publications.
In a statement, Zimpapers confirmed the development:
“The Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited (Zimpapers) Board Chairperson, Mrs Doreen Sibanda, has announced the appointment of Mr William Chikoto as the substantive Chief Executive Officer, with immediate effect.
“Mr Chikoto has served as Acting Chief Executive Officer for the past 10 months, during which time he successfully steered and stabilised the organisation. Mr Chikoto joined Zimpapers as a junior reporter and rose through the ranks to become the editor of The Sunday Mail in 2001, editor of The Herald in 2009, and group editorial executive in 2012, a clear testimony to his passion and dedication to his profession. His leadership and commitment have been instrumental in maintaining the company’s operations and ensuring organisational stability.
“The board expresses its full confidence in Mr Chikoto’s ability to lead Zimpapers into its next phase of growth and innovation, specifically focusing on the current digital transformation of the organisation. We look forward to his continued contribution and leadership as he takes on this substantive role.”
Mr Chikoto began his career as a cadet reporter at The Sunday Mail in 1987, rising through the ranks to become night editor, managing editor, and later Sunday Mail editor in 2001. He edited The Herald from 2009 to 2012 before being appointed Editorial Executive, a role he held until October 2019 when he briefly returned as Herald editor before resuming his executive duties.
As Group Editorial Executive, Mr Chikoto oversaw content convergence across all Zimpapers platforms — print, digital, and radio. He was also responsible for training journalists to write across multiple platforms and for shaping the group’s content strategy.
Academically, Mr Chikoto holds a Diploma in Journalism (Harare Polytechnic), a Bachelor of Arts in English and Communication, and a Master of Arts in Leadership and Management (University of Zimbabwe), which he completed with first-class honours in 2009.
This week’s launch of Zimpapers’ integrated newsroom signals a bold shift towards a digital-first approach, reflecting changing audience habits and reaffirming the group’s commitment to innovation.
