HIGHLANDERS striker Lynoth “Sonjy” Chikuhwa is flourishing under coach Baltemar Brito, with the forward having found the target seven times since the coach’s arrival in June.
When the Brazil born Portuguese joined Amahlolanyama in June following the sacking of Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu, Chikuhwa had only scored three goals. Chikuhwa has since hit the target seven more times and now has 10 league goals to his name.
The 29-year-old is Bosso’s leading goal scorer this season. Not only has he scored 10 goals, he has also provided four assists, which means he has played a part in 14 of the goals scored by the boys in black and white in the league.
It all started with a brace in Brito’s first official match in charge when Highlanders overpowered a determined Black Rhinos 3-2 at Barbourfields Stadium on 26 June. Chikuhwa has scored three goals in Bosso’s last two matches.
He was on target when they triumphed 3-2 over Yadah at the National Sports Stadium on 2 September, a win which ended Bosso’s wait for an away victory since July 2018 when they defeated Triangle United 1-0 at Gibbo Stadium.
Last Sunday, Chikuhwa stole the show with a brace in a 2-0 win over Triangle United as Bosso cemented their place in the top four.
He is five goals away from the league’s top goal scorer, William Manondo of Caps United but has caught up with Chicken Inn’s Brian Muza who was miles ahead a few months ago in terms of goals but is now enduring a dry spell. When Muza scored his 10th goal of the season the same weekend Chikuhwa hit a brace against Rhinos to take his goal tally to five.
With seven matches to go, Amahlolanyama have a three point advantage over Herentals. Crucial fixtures against FC Platinum, Chicken Inn and Dynamos in the coming weeks will determine what position they finish in. They are 14 points from the top spot that is occupied by FC Platinum but with 21 to play for and Norman Mapeza’s team making the trip to the City of Kings soon, that could change.
This afternoon, Bosso have their focus on the country’s most prestigious club competition, the Chibuku Super Cup with Bulawayo Chiefs standing in their way of a spot in the semifinals. Chikuhwa will once again be key as Amahlolanyama tackle Amakhosi Amahle. -@Mdawini_29
