CHILD RIGHTS CHAMP Zimpapers’ Gibson Mhaka among Africa’s top six

Zimpapers Writer

ZIMPAPERS’ award-winning journalist Gibson Mhaka has once again made Zimbabwe proud!

He has clinched a spot among Africa’s top six in the prestigious 2025 Isu Elihle Awards.

His powerful story idea, chosen from 178 entries across 26 countries, shines a light on the untold struggles of adolescent girls with disabilities in rural areas as they navigate menstrual hygiene in the face of stigma, cultural taboos, and poverty.

“It’s an incredible honour,” said Mhaka, who has bagged more than 25 local and regional awards. “I’m grateful to have my work recognised alongside such talented journalists from across the continent.”

The Isu Elihle Awards — meaning “great idea” in isiZulu — reward bold, child-centred reporting. As a finalist, Mhaka will receive mentorship from top media and child rights experts, plus financial support to turn his idea into a published work.

Joining him in the elite list are journalists from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.
