Jet Zimbabwe, a subsidiary of Edgars Stores limited has donated an assortment of brand new clothing to Harare Children’s Home in Eastlea following a fire tragedy that left over 40 children with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
A few weeks ago, at least 40 children lost all of their belongings in an inferno that tore through a two-storey hostel, leaving the home in desperate need for assistance.
Speaking soon after handing over the donation yesterday, Edgars Stores limited Group chief executive officer Mrs Tjeludo Ndlovu said they were moved to help after learning about the incident on social media.
“We did see through the media what had befallen Harare Children’s Home and we saw that we had an opportunity to actually assist because we had some of these brand new garments which we could donate.”
“With Jet, our focus in terms of corporate social responsibility is mainly children, I would like to think that this will not be the last time that we will come and do something for our Children’s Home,” she said.
Harare Children’s Home director Mrs Maria Sithole thanked the firm for extending a hand and remembering them during their time of need.
“I am lost for words because it has come as a very big surprise to us, this is something we never thought would happen, these are all new clothes, normally we get clothes that have been used but as you can see these are all new clothes.
“Our kids are a little sad because they lost some of their favourite outfits, so getting to put on new clothes after such an incident would be a very pleasant present,” she said.
Mrs Sithole also appealed to well-wishers to assist in gathering funds for the renovation and rehabilitation of the two-storey hostel block that was destroyed by fire.
“For the block that was burnt out we need things like good linen, blankets, we still need beds, uniforms and very soon our children will be going to back to school, our children go to two local schools so whatever that anyone has at home can be used here.
“As a home we depend on the community for support, so anything that you have in your house, we accept anything, with Christmas coming, there will be a lot of stuff that we will need just to put smiles on these little kids.”
