Chilumba targets Platinum silverware

“I am not building a team but I am coaching a team,” said Chilumba.
The former Hwange coach is very happy that he has been welcomed by the FC Platinum players and executive. Chilumba has also established a good working relationship with former interim coach Tendai Chikuni.
Chilumba, who is a legend in his native country Zambia, retired from playing for Chipolopolo in 2006.
He made a name for himself at Kabwe Warriors and played alongside Kalusha Bwalya and the two are the only survivors of the Gabon crash in 1993 that took away the lives of the Zambian national team players.
“I am impressed with the standard of football in Zimbabwe because most players here are very skilful and there is a lot of talent. I want to win more here and football is my career.
“I have a number of medals and have won the league title with different clubs but I have not reached where I want to be and that motivates me to work extra hard.
“I am looking forward to achieve more with FC Platinum this season,” said the former Under-20 coach of Zambia.
Chilumba paid tribute to the coaches who have been at FC Platinum before his arrival but he was surprised that they did not achieve much as the club had everything that is required by a football club.
The 40-year-old coach signed for FC Platinum in January this year and has already assembled a team that he hopes will bring a silverware that has been eluding the club for the past two seasons.
Chilumba managed a top four finish with Hwange in 2011 that later saw his team participating in the Confederations Cup but he later resigned last season opting to concentrate on coaching juniors.
He has already brought three of his fellow countrymen to the Zvishavane miners and together with Chikuni, they have off-loaded 13 players.
They have shifted their focus to young players and if their team is kept intact, they will soon reap the required results.
“I have signed a number of juniors to the team and they are going to bring a lot of competition when it comes to team selection and as a technical bench we are very happy.
“We are not going to be fielding any big names this season. I am already impressed with the combination of Petros (Mhari) and Thabani (Kamusoko).
“We have already done a lot of work during our trip to Zambia but all I need now is to work on team spirit, discipline and co-ordination.
“My assistants Chikuni and Anderson (Phiri) have already impressed me.
“Chikuni was the head coach and he has already adjusted well in his new position and Anderson is a good motivator, which leaves me a happy man,” said Chilumba.
Champions Dynamos and Highlanders are the teams that stand in the way of Chilumba and the gaffer has to come with a winning formula as the previous coaches of FC Platinum all failed to register a single win over the two biggest and oldest clubs in this country.
Meanwhile, FC Platinum will host Bantu Rovers in a friendly match at Mandava this afternoon.
