SEASONED scout, Mr Gift Chimbidzai has been appointed as the new provincial scout commissioner. Mr Chimbidzai who has been in the scout movement since his youthful days also recently acquired the highest ranking in scouting, his first wood badge, at a ceremony held in Kwekwe. Popularly known in the scouting field in the province as “Daddy” because of his fatherly approach when dealing with the scouts, Mr Chimbidzai in his acceptance speech promised to raise the scout flag high in the province.
Manicaland Scouts Association chairman and transport mogul, Mr Earnest Mungwari, said the province was optimistic that Mr Chimbidzai’s leadership would change the face of scouting for the better in the province.
He said Mr Chimbidzai’s first assignment would be coordinating the 2015 annual scout camp at Chinziwa Scout Park in Vumba scheduled for December 3 to five after schools close for the holidays.
Mr Mungwari encouraged scouts in the province to come in their numbers for the annual retreat.
“I want all the scouts in the province to come in their numbers to celebrate as a pack. It is important for scouts in the province to mix and mingle and create linkages. Scout Law Number Four says that ‘a scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other scout’ and I believe this camp as usual will help build those friendships and strengthen the brotherhood.
“I implore parents to allow their children to come and share with fellow scouts,” said Mr Mungwari. Having failed to hold the annual event last year due to other national scouting programmes, Mr Mungwari said a lot was lined up for this year’s camp. This year’s scout camp will be running under the theme: “Train a scout and create a better world.”
The theme which was derived from the scout mission statement: “Creating a better world,” is focused on helping scouts make a difference to their respective communities.
“A lot of activities are lined up including dynamics and obstacles courses which are critical for team building and leadership development, while on the second day and traditional day of camping scouts will be spoiled to disco and talent shows, mountain hiking and a campfire,” he said.
Mr Mungwari said scouts would have a chance to try the new game centre which was set up for the obstacle courses, while on the final camp day, scouts would traditionally carryout church service at the camp.
Founded by a British soldier, Baden Powell in 1907, scouting has grown to become one of the largest youth movements in the world. Mr Mungwari said the core business of scouts was to assist in humanitarian deeds that develop society. Membership starts from children in the cub scouts (8-11 years), young adults in the scouts section (11-17 years) and the adults in the rovers section (18-45 years and above).
