CHIMURENGA musician Nyika Shambamuto, also known as Nyika Zimuto Gwenyambira, is appealing for support to help him grow his music career.
He says this will also help him play a part in preserving Zimbabwe’s traditional music.
Nyika, who plays the mbira, said his biggest challenge is lack of financial support and a manager to guide him in his career.
“I want to sing for the nation and keep our traditional culture alive. I am asking for help because I do not have enough money to record and release my music,” he said.
Nyika said he started playing mbira while he was still in primary school before taking his music more seriously during his years in secondary school.
He took part in various competitions and events, including Starbrite, family shows, agricultural shows and live performances.
He said his music is mainly a way of reminding Zimbabweans not to forget their culture and traditional music.
“I sing real Chimurenga music and I have songs about our heroes. My songs do not insult our leaders.
“I want to use music to tell our stories and represent the nation,” he said.
Nyika said although he has been performing at live shows, he still needs to improve his performances and take his career to another level.
“My wish is to become better and to make a name for myself through traditional music.
“I have come from far but sometimes I feel like I am being stepped on and oppressed because I do not have the resources,” he said.
“I have the talent and the music but I need someone to believe in me and help me take this music to a bigger stage.”
