ZIMBABWE international Takudzwa Chimwemwe is hoping to get a contract extension at DRC giants TP Mazembe after helping the continental powerhouse to a league title in the 2023-2024 season.
Despite spending a significant chunk of the marathon on the treatment table, Chimwemwe did play key roles in the Congolese team’s success story.
He joined the giants at the beginning of the term and managed to feature in 17 games, recording 10 assists in the process.
With his stay with the five-time African champions officially ending this month, the former Harare City man is keeping his fingers crossed that he will be retained.
TP Mazembe have since opened renewal talks with the Zimbabwean.
“My stay here has already expired, but we are talking and hopefully, I will stay on,” said Chimwemwe.
“This is a big team and you ought to always be part of the team.”
Chimwemwe, who won two Chibuku Super Cup titles with Harare City in 2015 and 2018 as well as the Cosafa Cup in 2018, said winning the league title with TP Mazembe was a dream come true.
“It’s always great winning a league title in a foreign land. It’s not easy, especially after having endured a lot of challenges in the season,” added Chimwemwe.
“To find yourself in this big team is something you also ought to thank God for. It was never easy for me. There were a lot of ups and downs, injuries and sometimes not being able to make it in match day squads.
“Football is always like that. It’s never plain sailing. TP Mazembe have a lot of quality players drawn from all over and it is not very easy to play every game.
“I would like to thank God because I managed to feature in more than 15 games in the season. Winning the league title here is not a walk in the park. You have to put your bodies on the wall and really push.
“I recorded about 10 assists and I am very happy that those assists were able to carry the team in a way to achieve what we attained.”
Chimwemwe was part of the Warriors team that played in the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon back in 2022.
Then turning out for Zambian side Nkana from where he was signed by TP Mazembe, Chimwemwe was one of the best performers in that 2022 AFCON campaign where Zimbabwe bowed out in the group stages after winning just one game in the pool.
