CHINA has pledged to continue supporting Zimbabwe’s national development goals through targeted cooperation in food security, agriculture, infrastructure and poverty reduction — reaffirming its role as an all-weather friend and partner.
Relations between Zimbabwe and China date back to the colonial era, when China supported Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
That bond was further strengthened on Wednesday when Zimbabwe and Chinese officials signed new agreements to deepen bilateral ties.
The agreements are focused on sustainable development and economic resilience.
Speaking at the handover of 3 000 tonnes of rice and wheat at the Aspindale Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot in Harare on Thursday, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding said the food donation was part of a broader commitment to long-term cooperation.
“This is to the vulnerable communities,” said Ambassador Zhou.
“Last year, Zimbabwe suffered from a severe food shortage due to the El Niño-induced drought. And right after President Mnangagwa declared a national disaster, China responded by providing three batches of food assistance — including the one I signed yesterday at State House.
“Even Cyclone Idai-affected communities as well.”
He said the 3 000 tonnes of grain represent the second batch, following the first consignment handed over last year.
“Sometimes I have to ask my colleagues how many batches we have donated because this has become a consistent gesture.
“But in my view, this is not just about assistance — it is about partnership. We are committed to helping Zimbabwe achieve food security and reduce poverty through infrastructure support, irrigation upgrades and agriculture technology,” he said.
Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Mercy Dinha thanked the Chinese government for the continued generosity.
“We have received quite a lot — 1 500 tonnes of rice, and 1 500 tonnes of wheat. There is another consignment of 750 tonnes still on the way,” she said.
“This is a true reflection of friendship. China has stood with Zimbabwe from the liberation struggle to today, and continues to do so in practical and impactful ways.
“This food will go a long way in supporting child-headed families, persons with disabilities and the elderly — particularly in hard-to-reach areas. As Government, we will ensure it reaches those who need it most.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Simon Masanga, also praised China’s broader support.
“We thank China for the silos,” he said.
“Personally, I used to transport grain long distances, but now places like Mhangura have modern silos that ensure proper storage. These developments will go a long way in supporting our food systems.”
