Chinese embassy rewards 100 winning pupils

The Chinese Embassy yesterday awarded the top 100 students in the “China In My Eyes” drawing competition with prizes that included certificates and stationery, with the top 16 also receiving scholarships.

The competition hosted in partnership with China-Zimbabwe Exchange Centre had an overwhelming response as 350 students entered the competition.

The competition is aimed at discovering the most talented local students who are able to tell China’s early civilisation, its culture, and beautiful sceneries through art.

Participating schools were Queen Elizabeth High, Glen View 7 Council Primary, Sunningdale Council Primary and TC Hardy High,Kuwadzana 3 Primary,Marimba Primary ,Warren park 6 Primary and Ascot Kids College.

Only six students won the first prize and were each given scholarships covering three terms, stationery and certificates.

Ten students landed the second prize and were awarded scholarships covering two terms and stationery as well as certificates and the third prize was won by 19 students who got certificates, stationery, and scholarship covering one school term.

The rest received stationery only.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, wife of Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Madam Wang Wei congratulated the winners who exhibited unique skills.

“It’s my great pleasure to attend the awards ceremony of the “China in my eyes” drawing competition which is part of this year’s Children’s Day programme,” she said. “On behalf of the Chinese Embassy, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all award-winning students and gratitude to their teachers.”

Madam Wang said it was a tough decision to come up with the top 100 winners. “We are amazed by these colourful, lovely, and creative pictures,” she said. “Personally, I was stunned by your knowledge and interest in Chinese culture and elements.

“It was a difficult decision to make considering that everyone did their level best. We hope that both of you keep working hard and fulfil your dreams.”

Madam Wang said China welcomed more Zimbabwean students who want to know and learn more about the Mandarin language, and visit and study in China.

She encouraged students to make more contributions towards the development of this country and carry forward the China-Zimbabwe friendship.

Speaking after the ceremony, Queen Elizabeth Form 4 student, Kim Nyamakawo, who won the first prize, told The Herald that she was elated.

“I am so happy to have won this competition and it has opened my eyes to how art can be portrayed in different aspects,” she said. “It has given me the inspiration to do more.

“l took some time to study Chinese culture, among other things, with the help of my senior arts teacher Miss Precious Matarutse.”

China has consistently supported Zimbabwe to promote its country’s development and people’s livelihoods.
