Counsellor Wang Wei, spouse to the Chinese Ambassador Mr Guo Shaochun, has commended Chinese citizens resident in the country for promoting Sino-Zim relations at grassroots level.
She was speaking at Hossana Love in Africa, a school and orphanage in Hatcliffe, Harare, during a handover of various goods to the institution and community.
“I want to acknowledge and thank the Loving Mums, a group of women from Zimbabwe Chinese Business Association for coming up with this beautiful initiative that is changing lives and promoting Zimbabwe and China relations at grassroots level,” she said.
“They saw a need and addressed it.”
The donations included maize-meal and other food stuffs, bedding, Covid-19 protective wear and winter clothing.
Counsellor Wang paid homage to a Chinese worker in a local company, who wants to remain anonymous, for sacrificing part of his salary each month to donate to the home.
The worker has continued to do so even during the national lockdown.
Counsellor Wang said China continued to invest in improving access to education for the most disadvantaged children.
China and private players have built several schools around Zimbabwe, including Friendship High School, easily the best education facility in Hatcliffe.
“It is the principle of the Chinese people to go all out and help others who need help,” said Counsellor Wang.
The Chinese business community previously upgraded infrastructure at the school by renovating the dormitory block and by construction of a new toilet and a fish pond.
There are plans to build another classroom block.
Hossana Love in Africa Children’s Home director, Mr Abel Chivambo, said they were aiming at creating a self-sustaining model orphanage, with the first fish harvest expected in the next few months.
A batch of broilers is already on sale with the profit being reinvested.
The home now has eight goats after slaughtering three for food.
Harare North legislator, Mr Rusty Markham, who was present at the handover, received the maize-meal and bedding packs which would be distributed to 50 people with disabilities in the community.
Miracle Missions trustee Jackie Anderson told the children that they should rest be assured that someone cares for them out there, as evidenced by the unwavering support from all the different quarters.
