OVER the past several decades, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), China has been modernising a country home to 1,4 billion people to become the world’s second-largest economy. This has changed the global political and economic landscape like never before. China has created the two miracles of rapid economic development and long-term social stability, and the key to its success is the Chinese modernisation.
Another choice in pursing modernisation
China’s modernisation is achieved by following a development path suited to Chinese conditions, which means there is more than one path to modernisation. For any of the vast developing countries, it is entirely possible to find a development path suited to their national conditions as well.
Some western countries distort the concept of modernisation, and equate it with westernisation, regarding the western model as the only path to modernisation.
However, the western style modernisation has only actually benefited the minority — or mainly the developed countries — of the world. How can the rest of the developing world achieve modernization? Chinese model has offers other countries, especially developing nations, a brand new choice.
Modernisation of peaceful development
In contrast with Western colonialists who resorted to wars, and aggressions in the late 19th century, China has marched toward modernisation through relentless hard work, and blazed a trail of win-win cooperation on the world stage.
In the past 42 years, following the principles of sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith and with concrete actions, China has been supporting Zimbabwe to realise development visions, improve infrastructure and environment for attracting more foreign investment and overcome the negative impacts of illegal sanctions.
Dedicated to peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit, China will strive to safeguard world peace and development as we pursue our own development, and we will make greater contributions to world peace and development through its own development.
Modernisation of common prosperity for all
China always believe that only when countries develop together can there be true development; only when countries prosper together can there be true prosperity.
Through slavery, trans-Atlantic slave trade, colonialism, expulsion and slaughter of indigenous peoples, Western countries successfully made their fortune and amassed initial funds for modernisation.
As a result, the North-South gap and development gap keep enlarging, and developing countries have long been lagging in development.
It is in this context that President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Development Initiative (GDI).
Focusing on addressing unbalanced development among and within countries, this initiative sets out the goals, principles and key areas of global development and international development cooperation, and calls for commitment to such philosophy as advancing development as a priority and a people-centred approach.
This stands as a vivid example of China’s pursuit of modernisation of common prosperity for all the countries and peoples, and has created opportunities for leapfrog development for developing countries.
Modernisation of harmony between humanity and nature
China is committed to sustainable development and to the principles of prioritizing resource conservation and environmental protection and letting nature restore itself.
It embraces green and sustainable economy, and has made important contributions to global sustainable development.
Having over-fulfilled the climate action goals of 2020 ahead of schedule, China announced the objective and vision of carbon peaking, carbon neutrality and new goals of nationally determined contributions.
The Report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC stressed that China will work actively and prudently toward the goals of reaching peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality, and get actively involved in global governance in response to climate change.
These demonstrate China’s firm determination to pursue green development and promote harmony between humanity and nature.
Chinese modernisation will create a broad space for progress of human civilisation and provide an unprecedented driving force for the development of the world. Chinese path to modernisation, especially its guiding philosophies, is inspiring other nations to seek their own development paths and the world to pursue a shared brighter future.
