Chinhoyi gets nod to buy fire tender

Chinhoyi Municipality has been granted the nod to buy a new fire tender at a cost of $38 880 after it lost its only vehicle to a mechanical fault. According to minutes of a special council meeting held on Wednesday last week, councillors passed a resolution to allow the council to buy a new Volvo fire tender.

This was after the municipality’s director of health services, Dr William Mayabo, requested for the purchase of the vehicle.
In an interview, Chinhoyi Municipality spokesperson Mr Tichaona Mlauzi said the purchase of the fire tender would help the town to respond to any emergencies.

“This is a welcome development for our stakeholders considering that the one we have is broken down,” he said. “We have been struggling to replace the automatic gear box with all the major suppliers failing to provide the parts.”

Mr Mlauzi said Chinhoyi had been left vulnerable, while relying on other towns for assistance in case of a fire outbreaks.
Since last year, the Chinhoyi Municipality has been failing to attend to fire incidents or accidents because of lack of a fire tender.

Meanwhile, the municipality also took delivery of the last refuse compactors it bought last year bringing the total to three.
The compactor was said to have cost council $123 000 and was financed through council’s own coffers.

“Yes, we received the last refuse compactor,” said Mr Mlauzi. “This will help us to collect refuse on time. We urge our community to place their bins where they are accessible for easier collection.

“In the same vein, stakeholders are encouraged to desist from throwing garbage in undesignated areas.”
Chinhoyi is aiming to get a city status by end of this year.
