Chinhoyi husband from hell jailed four years

KASINA KAWOCHA from Chinhoyi is what some would describe as a husband from hell.

He inexplicably flew into a rage when he found out that his wife of 40 years, Spejina, had not bathed their nephew.

One would expect that this would warrant a stern word or two, perhaps even a disappointed shake of the head.

But not for Kasina. He thought this deserved the gravest of punishments.

Armed with a wooden log, Kasina struck Spejina twice on the head, leaving her bleeding after collapsing to the ground.

Instead of getting her immediate help, Kasina did the most foolish thing imaginable — he locked up Spejina in the bedroom and blocked concerned villagers who wanted to assist. Why let a little thing like life-saving assistance get in the way of proving a point about bath schedules?

By the time help arrived the next morning, courtesy of their son, it was too late.

Spejina succumbed to her injuries after being admitted to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital. Her tragic death was a needless end to a life spent enduring a marriage to a man who apparently valued control over compassion. High Court judge Justice Philda Muzofa was not amused. She saw through Kasina’s crocodile tears and lack of remorse.

The man could not even be bothered to engage with his late wife’s family or send emissaries for atonement. Justice Muzofa rightly pointed out that a disagreement over a nephew’s bath was petty, and certainly not worth a life. For his high moral blameworthiness and general lack of decency, Kasina received a six-year sentence, with two years suspended.

One can only hope the time behind bars will teach him that violence is never the answer under any circumstance.
