WOLVERHAMPTON midfielder Tawanda Chirewa is settling in well with the Warriors and eager to make a positive contribution to the team in the World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho on Friday, and South Africa on Tuesday.
Chirewa (20) made his senior team debut for Wolves this season. He played eight league matches for Wolves, starting just in one, and made two appearances in the FA Cup.
Before joining Wolves, Chirewa became Ipswich Town’s second-youngest first-team player at 16 years and 31 days after signing his first professional contract with them in November 2020.
He is looking forward to playing in his preferred number 10 position behind the striker and hopes to score goals and provide assists for his teammates.
“It’s good to be here, and this is my first camp with the lads. I am proud and excited to be here and am looking forward to the games. Everyone has been good to me. I can’t complain, it’s good to be here,” said Chirewa.
“l can’t wait to play. My best position is number 10 behind the striker. I can play forward, try to get goals, and assist as well. On our day I feel like we can have a competitive game so I’m not worried.
“We will just focus on our training, listen to our manager, and hopefully come Friday and Tuesday we deliver,” he said.
Chirew is one of seven England-based players in the Warriors squad, together with Brendan Galloway, Shane Maroodza, Andy Rinemhota, Tivonge Rushesha, Joey Phuthi and Tawanda Maswanhise.
Except for the injured Brendan Galloway, no other injury concerns have been reported so far. All the called-up players attended the training session yesterday at Wits University Stadium, except Teenage Hadebe, who was expected to report for camp yesterday.
Interim head coach Jairos Tapera and his assistants focused on a lot of tactical work to bring the players up to speed with his approach and methods.
