TAWANDA Chirewa strengthened his case for a bigger role at Wolverhampton Wanderers when his shot forced the own goal that set up their 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.
The Zimbabwe international started the second-round tie and was at the heart of the breakthrough in the third minute.
He collected Nasser Djiga’s ball over the top, cut inside and fired at goal. Joe Lumley parried the shot against Sil Swinkels, with the ball crossing the line for an own goal.
Academy defender Saheed Olagunju headed in Tommy Doyle’s corner in first-half stoppage time on his senior debut as the Championship side advanced to the third round.
Chirewa, who was replaced after 62 minutes, said he had been determined to make his opportunity count.
“It was a good performance from the team and, most importantly, we got through to the next round. For me, it was about taking the opportunity, working hard and trying to contribute whenever I get the chance.
“I felt good on the pitch. I wanted to be positive, attack the space and create something for the team. The goal came from that and, although it went in as an own goal, I am happy that the shot created the chance for us to take the lead.”
The outing was another chance for Chirewa to impress coach Cesar Peixoto after an encouraging pre-season in which he won and converted a penalty in Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers.
“These are the games where you have to show what you can do. The competition for places is high, so whenever you get minutes you have to make them count.
“I want to keep improving and keep pushing. My target is to play as many games as possible, contribute with goals and assists and help the team achieve its objectives.”
Chirewa knows the fight for regular football will require patience.
“It is still early in the season, so there is a lot of football to play. I am not looking too far ahead. I just want to take each game as it comes, keep working, and make sure that when the manager calls on me, I am ready.
“I believe in myself, and I know what I can bring to the team. Now it is about consistency and showing that every time I step on the pitch.”
