ZIMBABWE international Tawanda Chirewa has set his sights on securing regular first-team football at Wolverhampton Wanderers after making an encouraging start to the English side’s pre-season.
The 22-year-old forward has recorded a goal and an assist in three friendly matches under new Wolves coach Cesar Peixoto this month.
Chirewa featured for 60 minutes in a goalless draw against Portuguese side Estoril before playing the entire match and creating Mateus Mane’s winner in a 1-0 victory over Maidenhead United.
He continued his productive run on Wednesday night when he came off the bench and converted an 86th-minute penalty as Wolves defeated Doncaster Rovers 2-0.
Chirewa won the penalty after reacting quickly to a loose ball inside the box before sending goalkeeper Tommy Simkin the wrong way from the spot.
The Warriors attacker believes his early contributions have given him a platform from which to fight for a place in Peixoto’s plans for the coming campaign.
“My main target is to play regularly and contribute as much as I can to the team,” said Chirewa.
“Pre-season is an important period because everyone is trying to show the coach what they can offer. I have been working hard, and getting a goal and an assist gives me confidence, but there is still a lot of work ahead.
“I want to improve my numbers in terms of goals and assists. As an attacking player, I know I have to create chances, score goals and help the team win matches.”
Chirewa has also embraced the high-intensity approach introduced by Peixoto, with Wolves using their pressing game to create several opportunities during their opening friendlies.
“The coach wants us to play with intensity, press high and be positive when we have the ball,” he said.
“I am enjoying the system because it allows attacking players to express themselves, but we also have to work hard without the ball.
“My expectation is to keep improving, remain consistent and take every opportunity that comes. Competition for places is strong, but that is what pushes every player to become better.”
Meanwhile, Chirewa’s fellow country man Marshall Munetsi has been a regular member in the squad and is also expected to play a crucial role for the team in the upcoming season.
